Dr. David Steiner Elected to AdvancED Board of Trustees

Alpharetta, GA, July 22, 2013 – Dr. David Steiner, Klara and Larry Silverstein Dean of the Hunter College School of Education and founding Director of the new City University of New York Institute for Education Policy at Roosevelt House, has been elected to serve on the Board of Trustees for AdvancED, the world’s largest education community.

As a board member, Steiner will help establish the strategic direction for AdvancED, oversee the provision of accreditation services to educational providers and review and approve the annual budget and policies and procedures that guide the work of the organization.

Steiner previously served as Commissioner of Education for New York State. In this capacity, he also served as the President of the University of the State of New York, the state of New York's governmental umbrella organization that acts as a licensing body, setting standards for both public and private institutions in the state.

Steiner has achieved national recognition for his work at Hunter, including innovation in video analysis of pre-service teachers and partnerships with charter schools. US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has called Hunter’s teacher preparation programs “extraordinary” and “first rate.” As Commissioner, he took a lead role in the State’s successful $700 million Race to the Top application to support the redesign of state standards, assessments and teacher certification requirements.

“Dr. Steiner is an innovative leader who recognizes the importance of teacher preparation and performance in achieving student success. We are very proud to have him serve on the AdvancED Board of Trustees. His passion for ensuring teachers and students alike are successful in the classroom setting will help guide the mission of our organization,” stated Dr. Mark Elgart, President/CEO of AdvancED.
